How To Soothe Your Baby and Help Them Fall Asleep

disclaimer: These are a compilation of letters I've written to friends, or advice from my mother or friends. They are not written by doctors. Be sure to check with your pediatrician for any medical advice. Remember, that all babies are different. What works for one may not work for your baby.

As the new mom of a 5 week old, I've been experimenting and discovering new ways to survive parenthood. I just wanted to pass along a few tips that worked for me in case they can help you.

1. To calm a fussy baby: Turn on the oven exhaust fan and stand with the baby near it.

2. To soothe the baby to sleep: Turn on the dryer and put your baby in the car seat on top of the dryer (stay with the baby). This works wonders for putting the baby to sleep.

3. To help you and baby sleep: Use a white noise machine to create a womblike sound for sleeping. Also good for Mom to be able to nap during the middle of the day. I don't hear the phone ring or dog bark with the machine on.

4. To calm or soothe the fussy baby: Invest in a good sling or pouch to wear your baby.

5. In the same train of thought, put your baby in two slings so he/she is cuddled up to your chest and gently slow dance or sing to him/her.

6. A baby that loves to be held may sleep well in his/her carseat... it mimics the feeling of being held and confined. I also put a t-shirt or sweatshirt that I've worn alot over my baby's torso & legs so he smells my scent while sleeping (make sure his/her arms are on top of the shirt so that they can't pull it over their head.)

7. Several times my son fell asleep in his bouncy chair after I took a shower and dried my hair. I put the bouncy seat with him strapped in it just outside the shower door so I could see him. The warm moist air calmed him. Then the sound of the hairdryer afterwards lulled him to sleep.

8. If you aren't tired, and the dust is driving you nuts. Put your baby in a sling and start vacuuming. The white noise and your movement should rock your baby to sleep. (Be sure that your vacuum isn't too loud as to damage your baby's hearing)

Hope some of these tips help you all out. Good luck with your new little bundles of joy!
